Alan Ball, creator of Six Feet Under, returns to HBO with a new series based on the novel series
Southern Vampire by Charlaine Harris. The series follows Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic barmaid who finds comfort in the company of vampires since
they have no brainwave activity for her to read. She and her brother Jason were raised by her grandmother after losing their parents in a flood and she tries
to keep her telepathic ability a secret. Thanks largely in part to the creation of a Japanese-made synthetic blood called True Blood (where the series
takes it name) vampires have made their existence known to the world. Sookie works at the bar 'Merlotte's' which is owned and operated by her boss
Sam Merlotte who has a secret of his own.

I loved Six Feet Under, and Anna Paquine is the lead in this new show so I might sownload it. I watched the promo on YouTube and even though it looks a bit
campy, it could still be quite good. Maybe not BtVS good, but watchable.

Alan Ball told The New York Times that after all the doomy gloom of his series Six Feet Under, he was ready to do ''something that was a little more fun.'' Thus True Blood, based on novels by Charlaine Harris that Ball enjoyed for their sardonic take on vampirism. Blood follows Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, X-Men), a saucy Southern waitress involved with vampire Bill Compton (88 Minutes' Stephen Moyer), who looks at Sookie the way Elvis Presley probably did when he first laid eyes on the 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. In the world created by Harris and now Ball, vampires walk among us (at night, anyway) due to the development of Tru Blood, a synthetic liquid that slakes vamps' thirst so they don't need to feed on humans. ''Need'' is the key word: The naughtiest night creatures still enjoy dipping their fangs in the real stuff. Set in a tiny Louisiana town, True Blood is a Southern/absurdist/goth/civil rights horror show: Folks acknowledge that vampires exist; they just don't want 'em moving into their neighborhood. Juicy stuff, eh? The problem is, on the evidence of Six Feet, his Oscar-winning script for American Beauty, and now Blood, Ball has never seen a comic-dramatic premise he can't flatten with leaden metaphors. He pumps up a tedious subplot about vampires campaigning on TV for antidiscrimination laws. And he makes so many heavy-handed comparisons between vampires and homosexuals that you wonder if he's really never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The Lost Boys. Exercising his HBO freedom, Ball also twists author Harris' inverse notion - humans drink vampire blood because it improves their sex lives - into a lame joke about Sookie's brother (Summerland's Ryan Kwanten) getting a painfully huge erection. In the midst of all this, Paquin (who does a subtler Southern accent than Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer) and Moyer (who conveys Bill's courtly menace perfectly) frequently get lost in a series in which they're the central couple. Having read Harris' Dead Until Dark, the Sookie book on which Ball says he primarily based True Blood, I'd say that the author is more vivid, subtle, and funny in her portrayal of Southern life; I'll be surprised if her fans aren't disappointed by this adaptation. The best thing about Ball's shows is their opening credits. I loved Six Feet's coursing graphics even after I was so over the series, and I love Jace Everett's theme song for Blood. Singing the refrain ''I wanna do bad things with you'' with swampy lasciviousness, Everett does what Ball cannot: He earns his hokeyness. C |

I haven't read the books, but was going to watch a bit of the show (the promos looked interesting). Synn, I've read a couple of the books you
recommended and enjoyed them so I'll take your word on this lot!
Didn't see the premiere due to other programming! Should I bother to watch? |

Yeah, I've read Charlaine Harris's books that this series is based on. The show looks a lot like the books, except for a few things. This show is going
to be more gratuitous and sexy than the books thanks to it's home on HBO. Also Sookie is supposed to be a size 10, and Anna Paquin is...not.

I liked it. It wasn't great, but I found it to be pretty funny. Sookie and "Bill the Vampire" have pretty good chemistry too. I also liked the
southern gothic atmosphere.

I agree. Good, but not great.
Waaaay too much graphic sex. I hope they tone that back. It didn't serve the plot or characters in any way to have there be that much of it and that graphic. Jason is a man-whore, we get it. Other than that, it was a lot like the first part of the first book. Anna Paquin is pretty good as Sookie, although her accent isn't 100% consistent. Great casting for Bill, and plenty of chemistry between him and Sookie. Tara in the book is totally different than she is on the show. For the purposes of giving Sookie a friend and the show some comic relief, this version of Tara is excellent. ![]() WoW Gal#1 "The first hundred years are the hardest." |

The thing that bothered me about the graphic sex part: When they were watching the tape of the woman & the vampire, when he went all super speed on her,
she didn't seem to be affected in any way. That really made no sense to me.

I have to disagree with the accents. Granted I live in Alabama but since the Katrina I've had ample opportunity to hear a Louisiana accent.Tara's
accent is so completely off it's painful and my friend (who is black) wants to know why she is so damn angry. She wonders if they have any black writers in
their midst. I don't care for Sookie's accent but I think she did a fine job (having only ever read an excerpt from one of the books) and I like Bill
well enough. I love grandma. She rocks. I don't like the brother at all but I don't think I am supposed to. Sam is interesting and I do wonder just
what his secret is because they surely can't be talking about his thing for Sookie. It did have some fun moments and I agree about the over the top sex.
All in all I will watch it a few more times and I think if it has the time the actors will grow more comfortable with the characters.

~*I thought it was only so-so. I liked Sookie and Bill was good but he seemed older than in the books. I loved the granny! I was
turned off by the graphic sex. there was no need for it. Oh and I agree with Ruth about Tara.

What graphic sex are you all referring to?
I saw some soft-porn, but nothing I would classify as graphic. Especially when you consider this is HBO. I've seen almost as much on FX while watching the Shield.

See I thought it was much better than last week. It was by turns hot and gross imo. lol I loved Jason's line about not being that smart. LOL! I found
myself laughing out loud at a couple of points this time and feeling real sympathy for Tara (Mom needs to go!) and Sookie (how awful to know your mom thinks
something bad is inside you). I think Gran might know a bit more about vampires than she is letting on. Someone I know mentioned she thinks Sam is the dog (a
shapeshifter). I totally agree. Someone even noticed a picture in his office of a dog who looks like the one with Sookie guarding a blond little girl. Oh the
beating at the beginning? BRUTAL. Ugh. I rather wish Sookie had let someone know Bill saved her. I sort of get why especially after realizing what Vamps can do
and knowing the blond on the news killed that nutso preacher. I will watch again. I think it will now improve as they get to know their characters.

I'm with Angel, I thought it was better and it had a couple LOL moments. I also wasn't embarassed watching it with my bro and sis-in-law since the sex
was toned down a smidge. And it did a good job of setting up some backstory, especially for Sookie, and it also began establishing Charlaine Harris's
vampire mythology.
The actress playing Tara needs to thank her lucky stars that she got a role with so many great lines. I think she plays the character well, too. Angel, showing the pic of the girl and dog was a complete give-away on Sam's secret. I was a bit disappointed they made it that blatant. ![]() WoW Gal#1 "The first hundred years are the hardest." |
